Graduate Women WA Annual Anniversary Dinner

Muslim Women in Australia: Victims or Agents of Change?

Date: 27 June, 2019 Day: Thursday

Time: 6.30 pm to 9:00 PM Venue: Conference Room,

St Catherine’s College

Park Road, Crawley, WA 6009

Though only accounting for 2.6% of Australia's total population, Muslims attract disproportionate attention in the current global environment. With growing Islamophobia, Muslim women increasingly experience physical or verbal abuse. This has created an image of Muslim women, particularly those who subscribe to traditional Islamic dress code, as victims. The presentation argues that this victimization co-exists with agency on part of Muslim women. They play a significant role in Australian society by operating in economic and public spaces. Equally significant is their role in promoting understanding of Muslim women and creating spaces for interfaith and inter-communal harmony.
